For the first time in some 10 years, the green looked like this. It was the result of hollow tining carried out by our greenkeeper Chris.

Hollow tining removes cores of turf from the green. The cores of turfs are ejected, swept up and removed. When completed, a smaller mass of soil occupies the same area of green.

Over time bowling and walking on the green compacts the area. This makes drainage less efficient and the grass roots are prevented from absorbing oxygen.

Hollow tining allows the compacted turf to expand and air and moisture to be more easily absorbed.
